Homewood is a suburban community of approximately 8 ½ square miles and 25,000 residents. It is conveniently located in the southern section of the Greater Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan area. The people of Homewood enjoy a great quality of life with many amenities including an award winning school system, a great variety of retail shopping, quality churches and top- notch city services. The police department offers 24- hour protection and a number of specialized services. It is comprised of approximately 80 sworn officers and 40 support personnel. The department encompasses five divisions: Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Support Services, Special Operations and Traffic.
The Patrol Division includes three patrol shifts, three K-9 units, and the Community Services Unit.
The Criminal Investigations Division is comprised of a General Investigative Unit that is responsible for the investigation of crimes against persons, crimes against property and financial crimes.
The Support Services Division oversees a wide range of support units. These units include the Corrections Unit, and the Communications department.
The Special Operations Division coordinates the departments training and the Motor Scout Unit, Narcotics/Vice unit and the Tactical team. School Resource Officers are included in Special Operations as well.
The Traffic Division conducts surveys of traffic patterns and repairs and places traffic signals and signs.
